A total of 43 service companies
and organizations benefited last year from the Jordan Service
Modernisation Programme (JSMP), according to Jordan Enterprise
Development Corporation (JEDCO) Chief Executive Officer Yarub Qudah.
JSMP, which seeks to improve services and
competitiveness of small- and medium-sized enterprises, is implemented
by JEDCO and funded by the European Union under a 16-million-euro grant
agreement signed with the Ministry of Planning and International
cooperation in 2008.
Qudah told a press conference on Sunday that
the JSMP initiative, which seeks to increase exports of service
companies, enabled beneficiaries to overcome the impact of the global
downturn through grants worth of 430,000 euros.
At the press conference, Qudah announced the
launch of the second phase of the project, which will support companies
in the services sector through participating in trade fairs, upgrading
their exports capabilities, supporting societies and organizations,
assistance in obtaining quality certificates and providing support for
newly established service companies.
He called on companies to participate in
workshops on how to benefit from the three-year Programme which ends in
2011, noting that these workshops will be held in Amman on January 26,
in Irbid on January 28 and in Aqaba on January 31.
“The importance of the Programme emanates from
the fact that the services sector represents around 62 per cent of the
gross domestic product and that the local added value in this sector is
the highest among other sectors which is between 50 per cent and 60 per
cent,” he concluded.
